Staged Landscapes / Nuala Ní Fhlathúin & Cath Taylor

8th December 2018 – 12th January 2019
Opening Reception 7.30pm Friday 7th December. All welcome

This two-person exhibition from West of Ireland-based artists Cath Taylor and Nuala Ní Fhlathúin's incorporates sculptural installation, digital projection, photographic prints and archival pigment prints. Reflecting on a complex relationship between coastal and linguistic vulnerabilities in the Connemara Gaeltacht, Nuala Ní Fhlathúin's new work sites fragile objects in unfired porcelain alongside images suspended delicately from the ceiling, hovering in the space between the earth and sky. Cath Taylor’s mixed media installation meanwhile, proposes a landscape of contradictions: combining beauty with menace, expansion with confinement, and freedom with subjection. A second installation of archival pigment prints tells the story of the Poll Dubh Hoard, starkly represented in images loaded with mystery.

Nuala Ní Fhlathúin is from the Leitir Móir area in Co Galway. She received a BFA in 2008 and an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2011. Since then she has established a strong track record as a contemporary art practitioner in the Connemara Gaeltacht and further afield, developing an art practice around questions of place, language and visuality. She also works as an independent curator, researcher and art administrator. Her work has been supported by bursaries from the Arts Council of Ireland, Ealaín na Gaeltachta and Galway County Arts Office. She is currently engaged on a practice-based PhD with Centre for Creative Arts and Media, GMIT.

Cath Taylor lives and works in Kinvara, County Galway. Her work constantly crosses between disciplines and media, and includes drawing, printmaking, glass, photography, and installation. Cath went back to study art as a mature student and has been working full time as an artist for over twenty years now. She has a BA in Fine Art Printmaking from the Crawford College of Art, Cork, and an MA in Glass Design from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin and has exhibited widely across Ireland.
